π HALF PAGE β "MASSACRE AT TACUBAYA, MEXICO, ON APRIL 11, 1859" β WITH "STRIPPING THE DEAD"
A half-page illustration of the Massacre of Tacubaya β one of the most shocking atrocities of Mexico's Reform War (1857-60), in which conservative General Leonardo MΓ‘rquez ordered the execution of captured liberal soldiers, civilian physicians, and medical students who had been treating the wounded after the Battle of Tacubaya on April 11, 1859. MΓ‘rquez earned the nickname "The Tiger of Tacubaya" for these executions, which outraged liberal opinion across Mexico and the world. An accompanying quarter-page illustration of soldiers stripping the dead completes the grim documentary. A significant piece of Mexican history and Latin American history at one of its most violent moments.

π¦ ILLUSTRATION β "ZOUAVES LEAVING VERSAILLES BY TORCH LIGHT FOR THE SEAT OF WAR"
A dramatic illustration of French Zouave troops departing Versailles by torchlight for northern Italy β one of the most evocative military departure scenes in the 1859 run, capturing the romantic nationalism and imperial energy of Napoleon III's France as it went to war alongside Piedmont against Austria. The Zouaves β elite French light infantry originally from Algeria, famous for their colorful uniforms β were the most celebrated troops in the French army and their torchlit departure from the royal palace of Versailles for the battlefields of Lombardy is a vivid piece of Second Empire French military history.
π ILLUSTRATION β "ARRIVAL OF FRENCH TROOPS IN PIEDMONT"
A companion illustration of French troops arriving in Piedmont β completing the journey begun at Versailles. Together the two illustrations document the deployment of French power to the Italian peninsula that would prove decisive in winning the Second Italian War of Independence.
