A full front-page illustration of Clark Mills's equestrian statue of George Washington — the magnificent bronze equestrian group unveiled in Washington Circle in the capital in 1860, cast from cannon captured during the Mexican-American War. Clark Mills was the most celebrated American sculptor of the era, having already created the equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Square (the first equestrian statue cast in America) in 1853. His Washington — depicting the general on horseback at the moment of crossing the Delaware — was one of the great public sculptures of the Gilded Age. A significant and very displayable piece of American sculptural and Washington memorial history.
