🎨 WINSLOW HOMER — "NEW YORK CHARITIES — ST. BARNABAS HOUSE, 304 MULBERRY STREET"
Full page. The print that makes the issue. Winslow Homer — one of the greatest American artists of the century — turns his eye to St. Barnabas House, a charitable refuge on Mulberry Street in the very heart of Five Points: the most famous slum in American history, the neighborhood that held waves of Irish, Italian, Jewish, and Black immigrants. St. Barnabas House was run by the Episcopal Church and provided shelter, food, clothing, and medical care to destitute women and children — the most vulnerable of New York's urban poor. Homer's image shows the charity at work: women in worn clothes, children, the reception of the needy by the charitable institution. Mulberry Street would later become the center of Italian American New York; in 1874 it was still a street of multiple immigrant communities and extreme poverty. For Winslow Homer collectors, Five Points history enthusiasts, New York City charity history buffs, Episcopal Church history researchers, Italian American history collectors, Irish American history enthusiasts, and anyone moved by art about care for the poor.

🎠 FRONT PAGE — THOMAS WORTH: "PRIDE & POLITENESS"
Full front page by Thomas Worth — one of the era's most popular cartoonists, known for his social humor and horse-racing scenes. "Pride & Politeness" is a comic social observation, Worth's characteristic gentle mockery of manners and pretension.

🐟 FULL PAGE — "AMERICAN SARDINE FISHERY" — ELEVEN SCENES
An extraordinary documentary full page showing the American sardine canning industry in eleven separate vignettes — the entire production chain from boat to tin. The sardine canning industry was centered in Maine, particularly in the Eastport and Lubec area, and was one of the great American food industries of the Gilded Age. These eleven scenes capture: the fishing boats, the nets, the women workers in the canneries cutting and packing fish, the sealing of tins, the warehousing and shipping. Women's factory labor, industrial fishing, Maine coastal life — all in one page. For American food history collectors, Maine history enthusiasts, fishing industry buffs, and women's labor history researchers.

🦧 THREE-QUARTER PAGE — MONKEYS AND BABOONS — TWO PRINTS
Two detailed natural history illustrations of primates — monkeys and baboons rendered with the care of scientific illustration. In the shadow of Darwin's recent publications, primate illustration carried particular weight as both natural history and evolutionary debate material.

🍺 FULL PAGE — "THE POOR DRUNKARD — MORE HELPLESS THAN A CHILD"
The temperance campaign continues with one of its most affecting images — a drunk man, collapsed and incapacitated, compared explicitly to a helpless infant. The full-page illustration makes the moral argument visually: alcohol reduces a grown man to less than a child. Powerful temperance movement imagery at the height of the Woman's Crusade era.

⛴️ TWO PRINTS — "LIVERPOOL — WAITING FOR THE FERRY BOAT" & "LIVERPOOL — ARRIVAL OF THE FERRY BOAT"
Two companion illustrations of Liverpool's Mersey ferry — the iconic river crossing between Liverpool and Birkenhead. The ferry crossing was the daily commute and social ritual of thousands of working-class Liverpudlians, and these two prints capture the waiting crowd and the boat's arrival in the vivid street-level detail Harper's did best. For Liverpool history collectors, Mersey history enthusiasts, British working-class history buffs, and anyone with connections to Liverpool.

🎭 HALF PAGE — "PUNCH AT HOME"
A domestic interior scene — the Victorian parlor entertainment of Punch and Judy, the beloved and anarchic puppet show, rendered in a home setting.

    📄 THE SUPPLEMENT PAGES
    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🧬 PORTRAIT — CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN
Charles Darwin — author of On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871), the man who changed how humanity understood itself — appears in the supplement as a living, working scientist. In 1874 Darwin is 65 years old and still publishing: his book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals has just appeared, and his presence in Harper's reflects his status as the most controversial and important scientist alive. For Darwin collectors, evolutionary biology history enthusiasts, Victorian science history buffs, and anyone who prizes original printed portraits of history's greatest scientists.

    ✍️ PORTRAIT — ROBERT BROWNING
The great Victorian poet — author of "My Last Duchess," "Fra Lippo Lippi," "The Ring and the Book" — depicted in the supplement. Browning was at the height of his fame in 1874, his dramatic monologues redefining what English poetry could do. For Victorian literature collectors, Browning enthusiasts, and poetry history buffs.

    ⛪ PORTRAIT — DEAN STANLEY
Arthur Penrhyn Stanley — Dean of Westminster, one of the leading figures in the broad church movement of the Church of England — appears alongside Darwin and Browning. Dean Stanley was known for his intellectual openness and his willingness to engage with scientific and theological controversy. He presided over Westminster Abbey at one of its most culturally significant moments.

🕍 FULL PAGE — "THE MORAVIANS AT BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA" — FIVE VIGNETTES
Five vignettes documenting the Moravian community at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania — one of the oldest and most distinctive religious communities in America. The Moravians (Unity of Brethren) had founded Bethlehem in 1741 as a planned religious community; by 1874 it remained a center of Moravian life, education, and music. The five vignettes likely show the churches, the community buildings, the religious ceremonies, and daily life. For Pennsylvania history collectors, Moravian Church history enthusiasts, religious history researchers, Bethlehem PA history buffs, and German-American heritage collectors.

⚓ FULL PAGE — "THE NAVAL REVIEW — KEY WEST, FROM THE MARTELLO TOWER — FORT TAYLOR AND FLEET IN THE DISTANCE"
Two prints of Key West's harbor and Naval Review — the view from the historic Martello Tower looking out over Fort Taylor and the assembled fleet. A companion to the previous week's Key West torpedo practice centerfold. For Key West history collectors, US Navy history enthusiasts, Florida history buffs, and Civil War fortification researchers (Fort Taylor was a key Union stronghold during the Civil War).
