🏛️ LARGE PORTRAIT — "THE RT. HON. BENJAMIN DISRAELI, MP"
Benjamin Disraeli had just become Prime Minister of Great Britain for the second time in February 1874 — defeating Gladstone's Liberals and beginning the government that would define British Conservatism for a generation. Disraeli was one of the most consequential British Prime Ministers of the Victorian era: author of the Reform Act of 1867 that extended voting rights, architect of the modern Conservative Party, champion of Empire, and the first — and to this day only — person of Jewish heritage to become British Prime Minister. He had been born Jewish though baptized as a child, and throughout his career faced both anti-Semitic hostility and genuine pride from the Jewish community. This large oval portrait — published immediately after his return to power — captures him at the moment of his second great political triumph. For British political history collectors, Victorian monarchy enthusiasts, Jewish history researchers, Conservative Party history buffs, and Disraeli scholars.
🚂 FULL PAGE — FRENZENY & TAVERNIER: "AN OASIS ALONG THE TRACK"
Paul Frenzeny and Jules Tavernier were Harper's most celebrated team of Western illustrators — both trained artists who traveled the frontier together, sketching from life. Their collaborative work is among the finest illustration of the American West in the 19th century, and their prints are collected. "An Oasis Along the Track" shows a settlement or water stop along a Western railroad line — the thin lifeline of civilization threading through the desert, rendered with Frenzeny and Tavernier's characteristic eye for landscape and human scale. For Western Americana collectors, railroad history enthusiasts, Frenzeny & Tavernier art collectors, and American frontier history buffs.
⛪ HALF PAGE — "A MORMON FAMILY DRIVING TO CONFERENCE MEETING"
A Utah Territory family in their wagon, heading to General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. In 1874, Utah was still a territory and the Mormon question — polygamy, theocracy, statehood — was one of the most contentious issues in American politics. This half-page illustration shows a plural family (the composition suggests multiple wives) on their way to Conference, rendered without caricature and with genuine documentary interest. For LDS church history collectors, Utah history enthusiasts, Mormon history researchers, and anyone studying the history of religion and American politics in the Reconstruction era.
🏚️ FULL PAGE — "SKETCHES IN RAG PICKERS' ROW"
The rag pickers of New York City were among the poorest workers in the urban economy — predominantly Italian and Jewish immigrant men and women who collected rags, paper, bones, and scraps from the streets and tenements for resale to recycling dealers. Their neighborhoods were concentrated in lower Manhattan and were among the most wretched living conditions in the city. This full-page spread of sketches documents Rag Pickers' Row — the street life, the workers, the piles of salvaged material, the children growing up among refuse. For Italian American history collectors, Jewish American history researchers, New York City poverty history buffs, and immigrant labor history enthusiasts.
🦬 HALF PAGE — "SPORT ON THE PLAINS — MEN SHOOTING BUFFALO"
Buffalo hunters at work on the Great Plains — the mass slaughter of the American bison that was decimating the herds and destroying the economic and spiritual foundation of Plains Indian life. By 1874 the southern herd was nearly gone. This half-page illustration documents the "sport" as Harper's readers understood it, while the reality was industrial-scale killing. For Plains history collectors, buffalo/bison history enthusiasts, Native American history researchers, and Western Americana buffs.
🍸 HALF PAGE — "THE TEMPERANCE CRUSADE IN NEW YORK"
The Woman's Crusade continues — now reaching New York City, where women are organizing against the saloon trade in the urban neighborhoods. A companion to last week's national coverage, showing the movement taking root in the largest city in America.

📄 THE SUPPLEMENT PAGES

🌊 FULL PAGE — "THE NEW LIFE-BOAT 'THE PETREL'"
A large, dramatic supplement illustration of the lifeboat Petrel under sail in heavy seas — two sailing vessels running through breaking waves, the self-righting lifeboat design visible in its hull construction. The development of better lifeboat technology was a major Victorian maritime safety cause, and the Petrel represented a new generation of rescue vessels. Beautifully engraved and immediately frame-worthy for maritime history collectors.
⛈️ "UNITED STATES SIGNAL SERVICE — WATCHING THE STORM"
An extraordinary supplement illustration of a United States Signal Corps observer in his tower during a storm, surrounded by telegraph equipment and meteorological instruments, watching the weather. The US Signal Corps had been designated the official national weather service in 1870 — just four years before this illustration — and its storm watchers telegraphing weather data across the country represented the birth of modern meteorology in America. This is a primary document of the founding era of the National Weather Service. For meteorology history collectors, US government science history enthusiasts, and telegraph history buffs.
📚 TWO ILLUSTRATIONS — "THE CINCINNATI PUBLIC LIBRARY"
Two beautifully detailed supplement views of the Cincinnati Public Library:
· **The Parlors** — an elegant reading room interior with gas chandeliers, ornate cornices, and visitors browsing at long tables. Cincinnati's public library was one of the finest in America and a source of enormous civic pride.
· **The Main Hall** — the grand circulation hall with its tile floors, decorated columns, and shelved books visible throughout. Victorian public library architecture at its most aspirational.
For Cincinnati history collectors, Ohio history enthusiasts, library history buffs, and Victorian architecture admirers.
⚡ "MODERN GALVANISM" — SCIENCE ARTICLE
A supplement article on the latest developments in electrical science — galvanism, battery technology, and the emerging understanding of electricity that would eventually produce Edison's bulb and Bell's telephone. A primary document of American scientific curiosity in the years just before the great electrical revolution.
