๐ณ๏ธ THE FIRST PUBLISHED REPORT OF LINCOLN'S ELECTION
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
๐ฐ HISTORIC TEXT โ "THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION" โ FIRST PUBLISHED REPORT OF LINCOLN'S ELECTION
The first published report of Abraham Lincoln's election as 16th President of the United States โ published eleven days after the election of November 6, 1860. The initial report reads: "The Presidential Election took place as usual on 6th November and resulted in the choice of Abraham Lincoln for President, and Hannibal Hamlin for Vice-President of the United States. The details of the vote have not come to hand: we publish in the editorial the leading facts as known." The page 2 editorial โ headed "The Presidential Election" and occupying most of a column โ provides Harper's Weekly's full analysis, including the definitive statement: "It is certain, however, that Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, and Hannibal Hamlin, of Maine, have been elected by the people President and Vice President of the United States."
Lincoln's election โ on a platform opposing the expansion of slavery โ was the direct trigger for Southern secession. Within weeks South Carolina would secede (December 20, 1860); within months the Confederacy would be formed and Fort Sumter bombarded. The sentence "Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, and Hannibal Hamlin, of Maine, have been elected" is one of the most consequential sentences in American history โ and this Harper's Weekly is its primary published document. An essential piece of Lincoln history, Civil War history, and American political history of the highest order. Price this as a premium issue.

๐ฆ GARIBALDI โ THE GEORGE WASHINGTON OF ITALY
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
๐ฎ๐น FULL FRONT PAGE โ "GEN. GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI" โ WITH PAGE 2 ARTICLE
A full front-page portrait of General Giuseppe Garibaldi โ who had completed the conquest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and delivered it to Victor Emmanuel II just weeks before this issue, completing the most dramatic phase of Italian unification. Harper's Weekly identifies him as "the George Washington of Italy, the person most responsible for uniting the country" โ the highest possible American compliment for a foreign leader. With Lincoln elected and Garibaldi triumphant in the same week, this issue captures two of the greatest democratic leaders of 1860 at the apex of their respective national stories. A significant and striking combination.

๐ฐ FULL PAGE โ "FORT MOULTRIE (SULLIVAN'S ISLAND), CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA IN THE DISTANCE"
A full-page illustration of Fort Moultrie at Sullivan's Island, Charleston โ the federal garrison that would be at the center of the secession crisis just weeks after this issue, as South Carolina's secession put the federal forts in Charleston Harbor at the heart of the confrontation between Lincoln's incoming administration and the Confederacy. Published the week Lincoln was elected, this illustration of Fort Moultrie is an extraordinary piece of Civil War precursor history โ the fort that would be abandoned by its garrison on December 26, 1860, as the troops moved to Fort Sumter. A primary document of the Civil War's geographic epicenter at the moment of its ignition.
