A historically exceptional issue combining three significant stories β William Walker's final defeat at Truxillo, Honduras (published unknowingly just after his execution, making this a primary document of his last days); Francesco II, King of Naples, as Garibaldi closed in on his kingdom; and Columbia welcoming the Prince of Wales to America. Combined with three celebrated racehorses and a Syria missionary college, this is one of the most varied and historically rich issues of the 1860 run.

βοΈ WILLIAM WALKER β FINAL DEFEAT IN HONDURAS
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π TEXT REPORT β WILLIAM WALKER PUSHED OUT OF TRUXILLO, HONDURAS β UNKNOWN TO THIS PRINTING, ALREADY EXECUTED
A report on General William Walker being pushed out of Truxillo, Honduras β a primary document of the final chapter of the most audacious filibuster career in American history, published unknowingly just after Walker's execution on September 12, 1860. Walker β the Tennessee-born adventurer who had conquered Nicaragua in 1856, reinstated slavery, made English an official language, and briefly been recognized by the Pierce administration β had made one final attempt to establish a Central American empire by seizing Truxillo, Honduras in August 1860. He was captured by the Royal Navy's HMS Icarus, handed over to Honduran authorities, tried by court-martial, and shot by a firing squad on September 12, 1860 β ten days before this issue. The report notes he was "injured in the face" during the retreat but was unaware of his death. This Harper's Weekly text is a primary document of Walker's last stand β published at the exact moment between his death and the news reaching New York β making it one of the most historically poignant pieces of antebellum journalism in this entire 1860 run. A significant piece of American filibuster history, Central American history, and Southern expansionism history.

π KING FRANCESCO II OF NAPLES
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π QUARTER FRONT PAGE β "FRANCESCO II, THE KING OF NAPLES"
A quarter front-page portrait of Francesco II β the last Bourbon King of the Two Sicilies, whose kingdom Garibaldi had been systematically conquering since May. As this issue went to press, Garibaldi had entered Naples in triumph on September 7 β just fifteen days before β and Francesco had retreated to the fortress of Gaeta for his final stand. His kingdom was effectively gone; within months Italian unification would be complete. This portrait captures the last King of Naples at the moment of his kingdom's extinction. A poignant and significant piece of Italian Risorgimento history.
