π¨ TWO ILLUSTRATIONS β "THE LADY IN BLACK" AND "THE MEADOWBROOK PARSONAGE" β BY WINSLOW HOMER β APPROXIMATELY 3 Γ 4Β½ INCHES EACH
Two small illustrations by Winslow Homer β his seventeenth and eighteenth published works in the remarkable 1859-1860 Harper's Weekly run. "The Lady in Black" is a figure study in Homer's developing social genre style β a woman in mourning dress or fashionable black, capturing the Victorian fascination with fashion, femininity, and social observation that would define his New York period work. "The Meadowbrook Parsonage" is a New England architectural and rural scene β a country parsonage in the landscape tradition that connects Homer's early work to both the Hudson River School and his later Maine coastal paintings. Together these two small prints β each approximately 3 Γ 4Β½ inches β represent Homer's continuing development across social genre and landscape subjects in the final months before his move to New York City transformed his career. An original issue containing two early Homer illustrations β not reproductions β of the artist who would become one of the greatest American painters of the 19th century.

βοΈ ONE-THIRD PAGE ILLUSTRATION β "THE SACK OF DEERFIELD, MARCH, 1704" β POEM WITH ILLUSTRATION
A one-third page illustration accompanying the poem "The Sack of Deerfield, March, 1704" β depicting the Raid on Deerfield, one of the most notorious events in colonial American history, in which a combined force of French soldiers and Abenaki, Huron, and Mohawk warriors attacked the frontier town of Deerfield, Massachusetts at dawn on February 29, 1704, killing 56 settlers and taking 112 captive on a brutal winter march to Canada. The raid β part of Queen Anne's War β had been seared into New England's collective memory for 156 years by the time this Harper's Weekly poem appeared, and its illustration of Native Americans attacking settlers in a house is a primary document of how antebellum Americans remembered colonial frontier violence. A significant piece of colonial American history and New England historical memory.
