    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Harper's Weekly's Fourth of July issue β€” with a Thomas Nast double-page centerfold and a Nast front page, stagecoaches thundering through the Far West, trout hatcheries opening Colorado's rivers, and a supplement page that stops cold: the first illustrated depiction of a blood transfusion operation ever published in America. This is the world of July 4, 1874, in sixteen pages.

    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
    πŸ–ΌοΈ THE MAIN ISSUE
    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸŽ† FRONT PAGE β€” THOMAS NAST: "AN INFLATION OPINION"
Full front page β€” Nast's take on the great currency and inflation debate of 1874. The question of whether to inflate the money supply divided the country, divided Congress, and nearly divided Grant's cabinet. Nast had an opinion. He always did.

🎨 DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β€” THOMAS NAST: "LET US BE THANKFUL"
The Fourth of July showpiece β€” a full double-page Nast centerfold giving thanks in the patriotic, satirical, utterly American way that only Nast could manage. Two Nast pieces in a single issue, and this one is the grandest format Harper's offered.

🐎 FULL PAGE β€” "STAGING IN THE FAR WEST" β€” FOUR SCENES
A full page of four stagecoach illustrations β€” the Far West of 1874 in motion. Dusty roads, mountain passes, horses at full gallop, passengers holding on. The stagecoach was still the primary mode of long-distance travel across much of the American West; these four scenes capture the drama and misery of it with real feeling. A related article accompanies the illustrations.

    🐟 "TROUT-HATCHING IN COLORADO"
Half-page. Fish hatcheries were a new idea in 1874 β€” part of the broader American effort to manage and restore wild fish populations that the industrial age was already threatening. Colorado's mountain streams and their trout were being deliberately stewarded for the first time. A quiet but remarkable piece of early conservation history.

    β˜‚οΈ "KING KOFFEE'S UMBRELLA"
Half-page. King Kofi Karikari of the Ashanti Empire β€” "King Coffee" to the British press β€” had just been defeated in the Anglo-Ashanti War of 1873–74. His great golden umbrella, a symbol of Ashanti royal power, had been seized by British forces. Harper's covered the Ashanti War closely; this follow-up piece gives the human and political dimension of what was lost and taken. Essential for West African history and British imperial history collectors.

🏫 "LET LOOSE FROM SCHOOL β€” A SKETCH FROM REAL LIFE"
Full page β€” the pure joy of summer vacation rendered with Harper's warmth and humor.

    πŸ“„ THE SUPPLEMENT PAGES
    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🩸 "THE TRANSFUSION OF BLOOD β€” AN OPERATION AT THE HΓ”PITAL DE LA PITIΓ‰, PARIS"
This is the page. A full supplement illustration of a blood transfusion operation in progress at one of Paris's great hospitals β€” doctors gathered around a patient in a hospital bed, the transfusion apparatus visible, a nun in full habit watching from the right. Blood transfusion in 1874 was still experimental, controversial, and genuinely dangerous. The first successful human-to-human transfusions had only been performed in the late 1860s; the science of blood types would not be discovered for another quarter-century. This illustration is a primary document of medical history β€” the terrifying, hopeful, brilliant frontier of 19th-century medicine captured in a single image. For medical history collectors, hospital history enthusiasts, and science history collectors, this page is extraordinary.

    🎭 "PARIS IN WARTIME"
A dramatic interior supplement scene β€” figures in a darkened room, a sense of danger and concealment. From a French painting of the era, rendered in Harper's finest engraving work.

πŸ’Œ "THE LOVE-LETTER" & "PLAYING WITH THE CAPTIVE"
Two supplement genre scenes on facing pages β€” a woman reading a letter outdoors, her expression caught between joy and anxiety; and a domestic scene of a woman and child. From paintings by C. Simmonds and from a photograph. The Victorian interior, rendered with the delicacy the supplement format allowed.

πŸ“ "A HAMMOCK SONG" & "MUSICAL CHARACTERS"
Supplement poetry and music criticism β€” the literary and cultural life of Gilded Age America between the illustrations.
