ποΈ TENEMENT HOUSE POLITICS β NEW YORK CITY
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π£οΈ FULL PAGE β "POLITICS AMONG THE TENEMENT HOUSES IN NEW YORK CITY β LISTENING TO A CART TAIL ORATOR"
A full-page illustration of Lower East Side political life β immigrant and working-class New Yorkers gathered around a street orator speaking from the tailgate of a cart, one of the most vivid and democratic scenes in Gilded Age American politics. In the final week of the 1896 campaign β the most passionately fought presidential election since the Civil War β every corner of New York's teeming tenement districts was alive with political oratory, arguments, and organizing. The "cart tail orator" β speaking from an improvised platform in the street β was one of the most distinctively American forms of democratic communication, bringing the arguments of the campaign directly to the people in their own neighborhoods. A vivid, significant, and very frameable piece of New York immigrant political history and Gilded Age democratic culture.

ποΈ THE AUDITORIUM HOTEL β CHICAGO
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π¨ DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β "WHERE REPRESENTATIVE POLITICIANS OF ALL PARTIES GATHER β A SCENE IN THE FOYER OF THE AUDITORIUM HOTEL, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS"
A magnificent double-page centerfold of the foyer of the Auditorium Hotel in Chicago β one of the great architectural and social spaces of Gilded Age America. Louis Sullivan's Auditorium Building (1889) β housing both a 4,200-seat theater and a luxury hotel β was the most celebrated architectural achievement in Chicago before the World's Columbian Exposition, and its hotel foyer was where the political world of 1896 gathered. Both Bryan's Democratic campaign and McKinley's Republican operation had used Chicago as a campaign hub, and the Auditorium Hotel's foyer β where senators, ward bosses, journalists, and lobbyists mingled β was the unofficial nerve center of Gilded Age political life. A beautiful, significant, and very frameable piece of Chicago architectural history and American political culture.
