π¨ WINSLOW HOMER β BLACK AMERICANS EXPELLED FROM TREMONT TEMPLE
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
β HALF PAGE β "EXPULSION OF NEGROES AND ABOLITIONISTS FROM TREMONT TEMPLE, BOSTON" β BY WINSLOW HOMER β WITH ARTICLE MENTIONING FREDERICK DOUGLASS AND WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON
A half-page illustration by Winslow Homer of the violent expulsion of Black Americans and abolitionists from Tremont Temple in Boston β one of the most significant racial incidents of the immediate post-election period. On December 3, 1860 β just days after Lincoln's election β a group of abolitionists and Black Bostonians, including Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison, had gathered at Tremont Temple to mark the first anniversary of John Brown's execution. A mob of pro-Southern sympathizers broke up the meeting, physically assaulting and expelling the attendees β including Douglass, who was dragged from the podium. The police stood aside. The related article mentions Douglass by name and references a speech he made at the gathering β though the speech itself is not reproduced. The expulsion from Tremont Temple is a primary document of the violent suppression of Black political expression in the North in the weeks before the Civil War β and Homer's illustration of it, published in Boston's most famous concert hall just five days before South Carolina's secession, is one of his most historically charged and significant early works. A significant piece of Black American history, abolitionist history, Frederick Douglass history, and Civil War origins history β and a primary document of Winslow Homer's engagement with the racial politics of his era.

ποΈ FRONT PAGE β "THE CITY OF WASHINGTON FROM THE DOME OF THE CAPITOL" AND "THE NATIONAL CAPITOL AT WASHINGTON"
Two front-page illustrations of Washington, D.C. β the city and the Capitol building β published five days before South Carolina's secession would transform the capital from the seat of a united republic into the threatened heart of a Union fighting for its existence. The view from the Capitol dome captures Washington at the last moment of its antebellum peace. A significant piece of Washington, D.C. history and Civil War precursor history.
