    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

A collector's issue β€” a double-page Winslow Homer centerfold of the carriage drive in Central Park, showing the young park with its trees still small and newly planted, alongside Horace Greeley, the Prince of Wales's Canadian progress, and London, Canada West. The Central Park centerfold is among Homer's most charming early works β€” capturing the park at its most nascent, before the trees had grown to shade the famous drives.

🎨 WINSLOW HOMER β€” "THE DRIVE IN CENTRAL PARK"
    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🌿 DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β€” "THE DRIVE IN THE CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK" β€” BY WINSLOW HOMER β€” WITH NEWLY PLANTED SMALL TREES
A double-page centerfold by Winslow Homer of the carriage drive in Central Park β€” one of his most historically evocative early works, showing Central Park in its youngest state, the trees so recently planted that they are still small and spindly, offering almost no shade over the fashionable carriages and promenaders below. This is a primary document of Central Park at the very beginning of its life β€” the grand carriage drives that Olmsted and Vaux had designed as the democratic pleasure ground of New York City are here crowded with fashionable equipages, but the landscape is raw, the vistas open, the park unmistakably new. This is the Central Park that no one alive has ever seen β€” before the trees grew, before the park matured into the leafy urban Eden it would become. Together with the "Skating on the Ladies' Skating Pond" centerfold (January 28, 1860, held in five major museum collections), this Homer Central Park drive centerfold forms a magnificent paired document of the park in its earliest years by one of the greatest American artists. An original double-page Homer centerfold in a complete original issue β€” not a reproduction.

In 1860 Greeley was one of the most powerful voices in American public life β€” his Tribune had championed Lincoln's nomination at Chicago and was leading the Republican press campaign for Lincoln's election.
