Eighteen small illustrations from a Harper's Weekly artist's personal visit to the SS Great Eastern on July 28, 1860 — the most comprehensive single-issue visual documentary of the world's largest ship in the American illustrated press. The Great Eastern had arrived in New York Harbor on June 28, 1860 — as documented in the magnificent double-page centerfold of the July 7 issue — and had been anchored in the harbor for a month, drawing visitors from across the region who paid to tour the extraordinary vessel. This Harper's Weekly artist went aboard on July 28 and produced eighteen illustrations of every aspect of the ship — her decks, her engines, her saloons, her rigging, her crew quarters, her paddle wheels and screw propeller — giving American readers the most intimate visual tour of the Great Eastern ever published. Eighteen illustrations of a single subject in one issue is an extraordinary concentration of documentary material — a primary document of the most celebrated ship of the Victorian era at her American debut. The Damascus massacre of July 9-11, 1860, in which thousands of Christian residents were killed by mobs aided by some Ottoman soldiers, was one of the most shocking events of the 19th century, triggering European intervention and Ottoman reform. The three illustrations — a private courtyard, a street scene, and a panoramic view of the city with the ancient River Barrada (biblical Pharpar) — are a primary document of one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities at a moment of catastrophic violence.
