The tornado swept across the Mississippi River from Illinois into Iowa, making it one of the most dramatic cross-river disaster events in American frontier history. Harper's Weekly's four-illustration documentary — published just three weeks after the disaster — is a primary document of one of the worst tornadoes in 19th-century American history.
