A historically significant Risorgimento issue โ€” General Giuseppe Garibaldi on the full front page at the height of his Expedition of the Thousand, a map of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Messina, and a magnificent panorama of Naples with Mount Vesuvius, published as Garibaldi was conquering Sicily in one of the most daring military campaigns of the 19th century. Combined with the Washington Light Infantry of Charleston encamped at Orangeburg, this is a vivid primary document of the Italian Risorgimento at its most dramatic moment.

๐Ÿฆ FULL FRONT PAGE โ€” "GENERAL GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI"
A full front-page portrait of General Giuseppe Garibaldi โ€” the most celebrated military figure in the world, whose Expedition of the Thousand had landed in Sicily on May 11, 1860 โ€” just four weeks before this issue โ€” and was in the process of conquering the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in one of the most audacious military campaigns in modern history. With just 1,089 red-shirted volunteers and no artillery, Garibaldi had defeated the Neapolitan royal army at Calatafimi on May 15, captured Palermo on May 27, and was advancing on Messina as this issue went to press. The entire civilized world was watching Garibaldi's campaign with breathless admiration โ€” Victor Hugo called him "a hero belonging to all humanity," Alexandre Dumas sailed his yacht alongside the expedition, and Abraham Lincoln reportedly offered Garibaldi a Union Army command at the outbreak of the Civil War. This front-page portrait โ€” published at the absolute peak of Garibaldi's fame โ€” is a primary document of one of the great military adventures of the 19th century. A significant piece of Italian Risorgimento history.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ MAP โ€” "THE KINGDOM OF THE TWO SICILIES"
A map of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies โ€” the Bourbon monarchy comprising Sicily and southern Italy that Garibaldi was in the process of conquering and abolishing, to be absorbed into the unified Kingdom of Italy. A significant piece of Italian Risorgimento cartographic history.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ HALF PAGE โ€” "THE CITY OF MESSINA, IN SICILY"
A half-page illustration of Messina โ€” the great Sicilian port city at the strait between Sicily and the Italian mainland, which Garibaldi was approaching as this issue went to press. A significant piece of Sicilian and Italian Risorgimento history.

๐ŸŒ‹ LARGE TWO-PAGE ILLUSTRATION โ€” "GENERAL VIEW OF THE CITY OF NAPLES, WITH MOUNT VESUVIUS IN THE DISTANCE"
A large illustration spanning the bottom of two pages โ€” a magnificent panorama of Naples with Mount Vesuvius rising in the background, one of the most iconic views in all of Italian geography. Garibaldi would enter Naples in triumph on September 7, 1860, completing his conquest of the entire Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and delivering it to Victor Emmanuel II. This panorama โ€” published as Naples was still a royal capital, months before Garibaldi's triumphant entry โ€” is a primary document of the city at the last moment of its independence. A beautiful and very frameable piece of Italian and Neapolitan history.

๐Ÿช– HALF PAGE โ€” "ENCAMPMENT OF THE WASHINGTON LIGHT INFANTRY, OF CHARLESTON, S.C., AT ORANGEBURG"
A half-page illustration of the Washington Light Infantry of Charleston encamped at Orangeburg, South Carolina โ€” a significant piece of South Carolina militia and Civil War precursor history, one of the elite Charleston militia units that would be among the first to fire on Fort Sumter eleven months later.
