π THE SOLAR ECLIPSE OF JULY 18, 1860

βοΈ FRONT PAGE β "DIAGRAM OF THE ECLIPSE OF THE SUN ON JULY 18, 1860" β WITH TEXT
A front-page eclipse diagram and text published four days before the total solar eclipse of July 18, 1860 β one of the most scientifically significant eclipses of the 19th century. The eclipse of July 18, 1860 crossed Spain and North Africa and was the first solar eclipse to be photographed and the first in which the solar prominences were definitively proven to be part of the sun rather than the moon. A team of astronomers including Warren De la Rue and Angelo Secchi photographed the eclipse from different locations in Spain, and their photographs β compared for the first time β proved that the red prominences visible during totality moved with the sun, settling one of the great astronomical debates of the era. This Harper's Weekly eclipse diagram β published four days before one of the most scientifically consequential eclipses in history β is a primary document of Victorian astronomical science and public scientific education. A significant piece of American science history.

ποΈ FULL PAGE β "UNIFORMS OF THE 7TH REGIMENT, NEW YORK STATE MILITIA"
A full-page display of the uniforms of the 7th New York State Militia β the most celebrated militia regiment in America, whose gray uniforms, precise drill, and elite membership made them the standard against which all American militia was measured. The 7th Regiment would be among the first to reach Washington after the outbreak of the Civil War in April 1861, marching down Pennsylvania Avenue just fourteen months after this issue. This uniform display β showing the full range of dress, undress, and service uniforms of the regiment β is a vivid and very displayable piece of American military uniform history and Civil War precursor history.

π FOURTH OF JULY β THEN AND NOW
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π FULL PAGE β "THE 4TH OF JULY β 80 YEARS AGO" AND "THE 4TH OF JULY β NOWADAYS" β BOTH DISPLAYABLE
Two companion full-page illustrations contrasting Fourth of July celebrations eighty years apart β the sober, formal celebration of 1780 in the midst of the Revolutionary War, and the boisterous, fireworks-filled celebration of 1860 in the midst of the secession crisis. The contrast is pointed and deliberate β in 1780 the nation was fighting for its existence; in 1860, on the eve of the Civil War, it was about to fight for it again. Together the two illustrations form a matched pair of American patriotic history that is exceptionally displayable and frameable β the kind of paired then-and-now composition that defined the best of Harper's Weekly's illustrative journalism.
