A historically exceptional issue โ the Great Eastern steamship arriving in New York Harbor for the first time in a dramatic double-page centerfold, Garibaldi welcomed by the boys of Palermo, and the torture methods of Sicily's Bourbon prisons on the front page. The Great Eastern's first arrival in New York was one of the most sensational maritime events in American history โ Harper's Weekly had been covering the ship since December 1858, through her construction disasters, her maiden voyage, and now her triumphant American debut.

๐ DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD โ "GREAT EASTERN STEAMSHIP COMING UP THE NARROWS INTO THE HARBOR OF NEW YORK"
A dramatic double-page centerfold of the SS Great Eastern making her way through the Narrows into New York Harbor โ the culmination of one of the greatest maritime stories of the Victorian era. Harper's Weekly had documented the Great Eastern across a remarkable series of issues spanning nearly two years โ her construction (December 1858), her "Ready for Sea" front page (September 10, 1859), her magnificent saloon interior (September 17, 1859), her double-page centerfold at sea (September 17, 1859), and her designer Brunel's obituary (October 22, 1859). Now, on June 28, 1860, the world's largest ship had finally arrived at New York on her maiden transatlantic voyage โ 692 feet long, displacing 32,160 tons, six times larger than any vessel previously built โ and the harbor erupted in celebration. Every vessel in the harbor blew its whistle; excursion boats crowded around her enormous hull; New Yorkers lined the Battery and the Brooklyn waterfront to see her. This centerfold captures that magnificent arrival through the Narrows โ one of the great scenes in American maritime history โ and closes the Great Eastern narrative that Harper's Weekly had followed since her construction. A vivid, significant, and very frameable piece of Victorian maritime engineering history and New York Harbor history.

๐ฆ FULL PAGE โ "THE BOYS OF PALERMO WELCOMING GARIBALDI" AND "GARIBALDI'S CAMP NEAR PALERMO, IN SICILY"
Two illustrations of Garibaldi's triumph in Palermo โ the boys of the city welcoming their liberator and a view of his military camp โ capturing the human warmth of the Risorgimento's most celebrated campaign. Garibaldi had entered Palermo on May 27, and by July his forces were consolidating control of Sicily before the crossing to mainland Italy. A vivid piece of Italian Risorgimento history.

โ๏ธ BOURBON PRISON TORTURE IN SICILY
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
๐ FRONT PAGE โ "TORTURE OF THE TOURNIQUET AS PRACTICED IN THE PRISONS IN SICILY"
A dramatic front-page illustration of the torture methods practiced in the Bourbon prisons of Sicily โ published as Garibaldi was liberating those same prisons and exposing the brutality of the Neapolitan monarchy's rule. The tourniquet torture โ a device for applying crushing pressure to a prisoner's skull or limbs โ was one of the methods that Garibaldi's supporters cited as justification for the overthrow of the Bourbon regime. A significant and disturbing piece of Italian Risorgimento history and Victorian human rights documentation.
