A magnificent and decorative double-page centerfold of the grand ball given by New York City in honor of the Japanese Embassy — one of the great social events of 1860 and one of the most visually spectacular diplomatic receptions in American history. The Japanese ambassadors — in their magnificent traditional dress, silk robes, and lacquered wooden sandals — mingled with New York's finest society at a ball that was the sensation of the season, the collision of two utterly different worlds captured in one extraordinary scene. The Japanese delegation's visit to New York in June 1860 drew enormous crowds wherever they went — 500,000 people lined the streets to watch their procession up Broadway — and the city's ball in their honor was the grandest diplomatic entertainment New York had hosted since the visit of the Prince of Wales. This decorative double-page centerfold is one of the most visually splendid illustrations in the entire 1860 Harper's Weekly run — a beautiful, historically significant, and very frameable piece of American-Japanese diplomatic history and New York City social history.

A full-page illustration of Garibaldi and his red-shirted followers departing Genoa — documenting the beginning of the Expedition of the Thousand's mainland phase, as Garibaldi marshaled additional forces in northern Italy for the push toward Naples after his conquest of Sicily. By this date Garibaldi had captured Palermo (May 27) and was pressing toward Messina — his departure from Genoa with fresh volunteers was a vivid public demonstration of the momentum of the Risorgimento. A significant piece of Italian unification history.
