A historically varied Antebellum issue โ€” a Winslow Homer beach scene, the fourth and final installment of Dickens's The Uncommercial Traveller, a dramatic New York Bay winter gale, a Virginia senator who would become Confederate Secretary of State, and the New York Metropolitan Police chief. Homer's sixteenth published work in the extraordinary 1859-1860 run, combined with the close of Dickens's second serialization in Harper's Weekly.

๐ŸŒŠ SMALL ILLUSTRATION โ€” "ON THE BEACH" โ€” BY WINSLOW HOMER
A small illustration by Winslow Homer of a beach scene โ€” his sixteenth published work in Harper's Weekly spanning the extraordinary 1859-1860 run that began with "Skating at Boston" (March 1859, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum) and included the celebrated "Skating on the Ladies' Skating Pond in Central Park" centerfold (January 28, 1860, held in five major museum collections). "On the Beach" is an early example of Homer's lifelong fascination with the American seashore โ€” the subject that would eventually define his greatest mature work, from the Prout's Neck oils to the Gloucester watercolors. This small beach scene, published in the winter of 1860 while Homer was still based in Boston, is a primary document of the earliest development of one of the defining preoccupations of his career. An original early Homer illustration in a complete original issue โ€” not a reproduction.
