πΈ TWO SMALL ILLUSTRATIONS β "THE BUDS" AND "MRS. OTCHESON AT THE PIANO" β BY WINSLOW HOMER
Two small illustrations by Winslow Homer β his fourteenth and fifteenth major published works in the remarkable 1859-1860 Harper's Weekly run that began with "Skating at Boston" (March 1859, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian). "The Buds" is a seasonal spring scene in Homer's characteristic warm and observational style β the budding of spring plants or flowers carrying the same attention to seasonal American life that had defined his "March Winds," "April Showers," and "May Day in the Country" earlier in the run. "Mrs. Otcheson at the Piano" is a domestic interior scene of a woman at the piano β a subject that reflects Homer's growing interest in the social life of middle-class American households, a precursor to the interior scenes that would mark his early New York period. Together the two illustrations β small but characteristically Homerian β continue one of the most significant runs of early illustration work in American art history. An original issue containing two early Homer works β not reproductions.

π THE BERMUDA SEA SERPENT
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π ILLUSTRATION β "GREAT SEA-SERPENT FOUND IN HUNGARY BAY, BERMUDA"
A fascinating illustration of the great sea serpent found in Hungary Bay, Bermuda β one of the great Victorian natural history curiosities, at a time when sea serpent sightings were reported with great seriousness in the popular press and scientists genuinely debated whether large unknown sea creatures might still inhabit the deep ocean. The Bermuda sea serpent of 1860 was one of dozens of sea monster reports that filled the illustrated press throughout the Victorian era β combining genuine wonder at the largely unexplored ocean depths with the era's appetite for natural marvels. A vivid, charming, and highly unusual piece of Victorian natural history curiosity and Bermuda history.

π FRONT PAGE β WRECK OF THE 'HUNGARIAN' OFF SABLE ISLAND, NOVA SCOTIA
A front-page illustration of the wreck of the Hungarian β a Canadian steamship that struck the shoals of Sable Island off Nova Scotia on February 20, 1860, with the loss of all 205 people aboard in one of the worst maritime disasters in Canadian history. Sable Island β the remote crescent-shaped sandbar 300 kilometers off the Nova Scotia coast, known as "the Graveyard of the Atlantic" β had claimed hundreds of ships before the Hungarian, but her loss of all hands made it one of the most shocking disasters of the season. A significant piece of Canadian maritime disaster history.

πͺ HALF PAGE β "7TH REGIMENT MARCHING UP PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, WASHINGTON CITY"
A half-page illustration of the 7th New York Regiment marching up Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington β a significant piece of military and Washington history. The 7th New York was the most celebrated militia regiment in America, and its appearances in the capital were always noted. Just fourteen months later the 7th would be among the first regiments to reach Washington after the outbreak of the Civil War. A significant piece of Civil War precursor history.
βοΈ THIRD INSTALLMENT β "THE UNCOMMERCIAL TRAVELLER" BY CHARLES DICKENS
The third American installment of Dickens's The Uncommercial Traveller β continuing the personal essay series that had begun in February 1860.
