The Indian Territory of 1896 was the present-day state of Oklahoma — the land set aside for the Five Civilized Tribes after the forced removals of the 1830s, and by 1896 a vast, still largely unorganized territory of cowboys, ranchers, outlaws, and Native communities that would become Oklahoma Territory just thirteen years later in 1907. The image of a cowboy lassoing a wild turkey — the ultimate American holiday game caught by the ultimate American frontier character — is a brilliant combination of Western adventure and seasonal holiday humor.
