πͺ FULL PAGE β FREDERIC REMINGTON: "HASTY ENTRENCHMENT DRILL IN THE U.S. ARMY" β DISPLAYABLE
A full-page and displayable Frederic Remington illustration of a hasty entrenchment drill in the United States Army β one of Remington's military training scenes capturing the Army's tactical preparations in the years just before the Spanish-American War transformed it from a frontier constabulary into a major imperial fighting force. Remington had embedded with Army units throughout the 1880s and 1890s β riding with cavalry patrols, witnessing exercises, and documenting the daily life of the regular soldier with the same authenticity that made his Western work so celebrated. This Army drill illustration published in 1896 is a primary document of the pre-Spanish-American War U.S. Army β two years before the charges at San Juan Hill would make Remington's war coverage world famous. An original Remington print β not a reproduction β in a complete original issue. A significant and very displayable piece of American military history and Remington's art.

ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π FULL PAGE β PHOTOGRAPHS OF DESTRUCTION BY A "SEISMIC-WAVE" IN JAPAN
A full page of photographs documenting the destruction caused by a seismic wave β a tsunami β in Japan. The June 15, 1896 Meiji-Sanriku earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan's Sanriku coast was one of the most devastating in Japanese history, killing approximately 22,000 people and destroying 9,000 homes. The tsunami waves reached heights of up to 38.2 meters β still among the highest tsunami waves ever recorded β and swept entire coastal villages into the sea with almost no warning. This Harper's Weekly photographic documentation of the disaster β published just weeks after the event β is a primary document of one of the most catastrophic natural disasters of the 19th century and some of the earliest photographic documentation of tsunami destruction in the American press. A significant and sobering piece of Japanese natural disaster history and Pacific natural science history.
