π’ THE GREAT EASTERN β READY FOR SEA
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π’ FRONT PAGE β "THE 'GREAT EASTERN' STEAMSHIP READY FOR SEA" β WITH ARTICLE
A front-page illustration and article of the SS Great Eastern β the largest ship in the world by a factor of six β finally ready to sail after two years of catastrophic delays, construction problems, and the death of her designer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The Great Eastern had been launched in January 1858 after a nightmarish construction that had bankrupted her builders, and a boiler explosion on her maiden voyage in September 1858 had killed five men and further delayed her service. By September 1859 she was finally being readied for her transatlantic service β though she would prove commercially unsuccessful as a passenger liner. Her greatest achievement would come in 1866, when she laid the first permanent transatlantic telegraph cable. This front-page illustration β showing the Great Eastern "ready for sea" β is a primary document of one of the greatest engineering achievements of the Victorian era at its moment of (at last) impending departure. A significant piece of Victorian maritime engineering history.

ποΈ CHICAGO β NINE SCENES
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
ποΈ ONE-THIRD PAGE β "THE CITY OF CHICAGO" β NINE SCENES
Nine scenes of Chicago β published at a moment of extraordinary transformation for the city, which had grown from a frontier trading post of 4,000 people in 1840 to a city of over 100,000 in 1859 and would reach nearly 300,000 by 1870. Chicago in 1859 was the fastest-growing city in the world, its economy powered by the railroads that made it the great hub of the American heartland and the meatpacking industry that would make it famous. Just two years later, Lincoln would be nominated for president at the Republican National Convention in Chicago. A vivid and significant piece of Chicago urban history at the beginning of its meteoric rise.
