π FULL PAGE β "A CADET HOP AT WEST POINT" β BY WINSLOW HOMER
A full-page wood engraving by Winslow Homer β his sixth published illustration in Harper's Weekly in 1859, capturing the formal cadet dances at the United States Military Academy that were one of the great social events of the Hudson Valley season. The West Point Hop β a formal ball at which cadets in dress uniform danced with young women from the surrounding region and from New York society β was already a beloved American institution, and Homer's rendering of the scene captures the elegant formality and youthful energy of the occasion with his characteristic warmth and observational precision. This is one of the earliest published illustrations of a West Point social event in the American press. An original print in a complete original issue β not a reproduction β of an early work by one of the greatest American painters of the 19th century.

π° FRONT PAGE β "INTERVIEW BETWEEN BRIGHAM YOUNG AND HON. HORACE GREELEY AT SALT LAKE CITY" β WITH ILLUSTRATION AND ARTICLE
A front-page illustration and article of the famous interview between Brigham Young β the Prophet, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the de facto ruler of the Utah Territory β and Horace Greeley, the editor of the New-York Tribune and the most influential journalist in America. Greeley had traveled to Salt Lake City on his famous overland journey to California in the summer of 1859, which he would chronicle in "An Overland Journey from New York to San Francisco" (1860). His interview with Brigham Young was one of the most remarkable journalistic encounters of the antebellum era β Greeley asking sharp questions about polygamy, theocracy, and the relationship between the LDS church and the federal government, and Young answering with characteristic directness and confidence. The interview was published simultaneously in the Tribune and in Harper's Weekly, making this a primary document of one of the most consequential journalistic encounters of the 1850s. A significant piece of LDS history, Western American history, and American journalism history.
