A collector's issue anchored by the fifth Winslow Homer illustration in this extraordinary 1859 run β "August in the Country: The Seashore," published by the 23-year-old Homer in the final months before his move to New York City that would launch his career as one of the greatest American painters of the 19th century. Combined with a whale found near Flushing, Long Island and a continuing Dickens serialization, this is a warm and collectible summer issue.

π FULL PAGE β "AUGUST IN THE COUNTRY: THE SEASHORE" β BY WINSLOW HOMER
A full-page wood engraving by Winslow Homer β the fifth Homer illustration in Harper's Weekly in the space of six months, following "Skating at Boston" (March 12, held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum), "March Winds" and "April Showers" (April 2, held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Clark Art Institute), and "May Day in the Country" (April 30). Homer was 23 years old when this appeared β still working from Boston, in the final months before his move to New York City in the fall of 1859 β and "August in the Country: The Seashore" continues his early focus on seasonal American leisure and outdoor life that would define his career for the next five decades. The seashore subjects he documented in these early Harper's Weekly prints β people at play beside the sea, the rhythms of coastal life β would eventually become the great subjects of his mature oil paintings, from the Prout's Neck seascapes to the Gloucester fishing scenes. This remarkable 1859 concentration of Homer works β five major prints in six months β is the foundation of one of the greatest careers in American art. An original print in a complete original issue β not a reproduction β of an early work by one of the greatest American painters.
