π©Ί TWO-PAGE ARTICLE & ILLUSTRATIONS β "DR. HORACE GREEN AND HIS METHOD" β MEDICAL INSTRUMENTS AND ANATOMICAL VIEWS
A significant two-page medical article on Dr. Horace Green β the pioneering American laryngologist who developed some of the first direct treatment methods for diseases of the throat and lungs, including the use of a curved silver probang to apply topical medications directly to the larynx and trachea β a technique so radical that the medical establishment initially refused to believe it was possible. Green had published his landmark Treatise on Diseases of the Air Passages in 1846, and by 1859 he was the most celebrated throat specialist in America, practicing from his New York offices and treating patients including prominent politicians and clergymen. The illustrations in this article β medical instruments and three anatomical views of the throat, lungs, and surrounding structures β are among the most detailed medical illustrations published in the popular American press to that date. A significant and unusual piece of American medical history, the history of laryngology, and Victorian scientific illustration β a primary document of a medical pioneer published in the nation's most widely read illustrated newspaper.
