━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🗞️ HARPER'S WEEKLY · April 11, 1874
Complete Issue + Supplement Pages · New York
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A Black family confronted at a segregated streetcar — one of the most direct illustrations of racial injustice in public transportation Harper's ever published. US Navy torpedo practice at Key West across a double-page centerfold. Settlers fleeing an Indian raid. Thomas Nast on the front page. Ophir City Utah and the Far West mail-coach. A frontier vigilance court in session, drawn by Frenzeny and Tavernier. A city mission school for the urban poor drawn by C.S. Reinhart. And a run on the bank during the Panic of 1873. This is April 11, 1874.

🖼️ THE MAIN ISSUE — EVERY ILLUSTRATION
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🎨 FRONT PAGE — THOMAS NAST: "THE CRADLE OF LIBERTY IN DANGER"
Full front page — Nast in the spring of 1874, warning that American democracy's founding ideals are under threat. The Cradle of Liberty — Faneuil Hall in Boston — endangered by the forces of corruption, reaction, or both. A signature Nast political allegory at the height of the Reconstruction crisis.
⚓ DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD — "THE NAVAL REVIEW AT KEY WEST — TORPEDO PRACTICE"
The full double-page centerfold documents US Navy torpedo warfare exercises at Key West, Florida — the Navy's southernmost deep-water base and one of the most strategically important harbors in the Western Hemisphere. Torpedo technology was still new and experimental in the 1870s — the Civil War had introduced it in primitive form, and the Navy was now developing it into a systematic weapons system. This double-page centerfold shows the practice: ships in formation, torpedo runs, the harbor of Key West framing the scene. For naval history collectors, Key West history enthusiasts, Florida history buffs, and military technology history researchers.
🏃 THREE-QUARTER PAGE — "DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES — FLYING FROM AN INDIAN RAID"
Settler families in flight from a Native American raid on the frontier — a three-quarter-page illustration of the violence and terror that defined life on the contested edges of westward expansion. By 1874 the Red River War was just months away; the Plains Wars were entering their final and most brutal phase. This illustration shows the settler's experience of that conflict.
🌵 FULL PAGE — "SKETCHES IN THE FAR WEST" — OPHIR CITY, UTAH
Full-page illustration showing a view of Ophir City, Utah — one of the silver mining boomtowns of the Oquirrh Mountains — alongside a stagecoach scene. Ophir was a genuine silver rush town, boom and bust, clinging to the side of the Oquirrh range. For Utah history collectors, mining history enthusiasts, and Western Americana buffs.
⛰️ HALF PAGE + THIRD PAGE — "SETTLER'S CABIN ON BALD MOUNTAIN" & "BALD MOUNTAIN"
Two companion illustrations of a frontier settler's life in the mountains — the cabin, the landscape, the isolation of homesteading in high country.
🍾 FULL PAGE — "THE BOTTLE IMP" BY FRANK BELLEW
Frank Bellew — Nast's great rival and complement at Harper's — contributes a full-page allegorical illustration "The Bottle Imp": a demon or spirit associated with alcohol, the temperance movement's supernatural metaphor for addiction made visual. Bellew was a master of the grotesque and the whimsical; this piece is characteristic of his best work.

📄 THE SUPPLEMENT PAGES
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
✊ "AN INCIDENT OF THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN NEGRO VAGRANTS AND THEIR CAUCASIAN BROTHERS — NOT AT NEGRO CITY" — SEGREGATED STREETCAR SCENE
The most historically significant page in the supplement. The title — dripping with sarcasm — signals Harper's contempt for the racist framing of the debate: calling Black Americans seeking equal treatment "vagrants" was a common tactic of those resisting the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which was then being debated in Congress. The illustration shows a confrontation at or on a streetcar labeled "NEGROES CAR No. 1" — a segregated car — with Black and white figures in conflict or confrontation over equal access to public transportation. This is a primary document of the fight for civil rights in public accommodations in Reconstruction America — the exact issue that the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was designed to address, and that the Supreme Court struck down in 1883. For African American history collectors, civil rights history researchers, Reconstruction era scholars, public transit history enthusiasts, and anyone who knows the long arc of the struggle for equal access in American life — this supplement page is a primary source.
🏦 "HARD TIMES — A RUN ON THE BANK"
The Panic of 1873 is still reverberating. A full supplement illustration of a crowd pressing against a bank to withdraw their deposits — the bank run in progress, the faces of ordinary people in financial terror. One of the most viscerally recognizable images of economic crisis, rendered from life. For financial history collectors, Gilded Age economic history researchers, and banking history enthusiasts.
🤠 "SKETCHES IN THE FAR WEST" — SIX SCENES
A supplement page packed with Far West vignettes — all vivid, all specific:
· **Ophir City, Utah** — the silver mining town on the hillside, its boom-era buildings clinging to the slope
· **The Ophir City Mail-Coach** — a stagecoach at full gallop through rocky terrain, mail and passengers in motion
· **After Fresh Meat** — a horseman in pursuit of game on the open Plains
· **The Last of His Race** — a solitary figure on the Plains, rendered as elegiac and final — the Victorian imagination of the vanishing Native American, both romanticized and documented
· **Miners Cleaning Out a Saloon** — frontier miners in a saloon, rowdy and celebratory
· Companion text articles about Utah Territory, Indian Territory, and Plains life
⚖️ "SKETCHES IN THE FAR WEST — VIGILANCE COURT IN SESSION" — DRAWN BY FRENZENY AND TAVERNIER
A full-page supplement illustration by the celebrated team of Paul Frenzeny and Jules Tavernier — Harper's finest Western illustrators, both trained artists who traveled the frontier to sketch from life. A frontier vigilance committee has assembled: rough men gathered in the open, a figure being restrained or punished, the improvised justice of the Far West operating outside any formal legal system. Vigilance committees were a defining institution of frontier life — the extralegal enforcement that preceded established courts. For Frenzeny & Tavernier collectors, Western Americana enthusiasts, frontier justice history buffs, and American law history researchers.
📚 "A CITY MISSION SCHOOL" — DRAWN BY C.S. REINHART
A full-page supplement illustration by Charles Stanley Reinhart — one of Harper's most gifted and beloved illustrators. A city mission school in session: poor urban children crowded onto benches, a woman teacher in Victorian dress at the front, barefoot children in patched clothes, a "Fund Pet Lambs" notice on the wall. The mission school movement provided basic education and care to the children of the urban poor — the streets of New York and other cities sent into classrooms through charitable effort. Reinhart renders the scene with warmth and dignity, the children engaged, the teacher patient. For education history collectors, Victorian charitable institution researchers, urban poverty history enthusiasts, and C.S. Reinhart admirers.
