━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Thomas Nast's most debated Reconstruction cartoon — Black politicians governing a Southern state — on the front page. Women marching into saloons in the first great wave of organized temperance activism. A portrait and obituary of Baron Rothschild, head of the most powerful Jewish banking dynasty in the world. Sami reindeer herders encamped on the frozen Neva River in St. Petersburg. British troops loading livestock for the Ashanti Expedition in West Africa. And a supplement showing, in two dramatic full-page panels, everything a sober family gains and a drinking family loses. This is Harper's Weekly at its most morally charged and globally aware.

✊ FRONT PAGE — THOMAS NAST: "COLORED RULE IN A RECONSTRUCTED STATE"
Full front page. This is one of the most historically significant and debated cartoons Thomas Nast ever drew — a primary document of Reconstruction-era politics and race in America. The cartoon depicts Black politicians presiding over a Southern state legislature, with white figures below them. Nast was a Republican and a genuine supporter of Black civil rights; the cartoon has been interpreted as a defense of Black political participation — evidence that Black governance was capable and legitimate — and also as a more ambiguous commentary on the excesses and corruption of Reconstruction politics. Whatever the reading, it is a document of the exact political moment when the fate of Black political power in the South was being decided, and when the forces aligned against Reconstruction were beginning their counterattack. For African American history collectors, Reconstruction era scholars, Black political history enthusiasts, Thomas Nast researchers, and anyone who studies the history of race and democracy in America — this front page is irreplaceable primary source material.
👩 FULL PAGE — "WOMAN'S CRUSADE AGAINST INTEMPERANCE"
In the winter and spring of 1874, thousands of women across Ohio, Indiana, and other states marched into saloons, knelt on the floors, prayed aloud, and refused to leave until the proprietors signed pledges to stop selling alcohol. The Woman's Crusade was the most dramatic direct-action women's movement in American history up to that point — spontaneous, decentralized, and remarkably effective. It directly inspired the founding of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in 1874. This full-page illustration captures the Crusade in action — women in their Sunday best, kneeling in a barroom, the saloonkeeper watching from behind his bar. For women's history collectors, temperance movement researchers, WCTU history enthusiasts, and women's activism historians.
💰 PORTRAIT — "THE LATE BARON ROTHSCHILD"
Baron Mayer de Rothschild — the head of the British branch of the House of Rothschild, the most powerful banking dynasty in the world and the most prominent Jewish family in British public life — died in February 1874. His portrait appears here with an accompanying article at the time of his death. The Rothschilds had transformed finance, funded governments, and broken barriers against Jewish participation in British public life throughout the 19th century. For Jewish history collectors, British financial history enthusiasts, Rothschild family history buffs, and banking history researchers.
🌍 THREE-QUARTER PAGE — "TAKING IN LIVE STOCK FOR THE ASHANTEE EXPEDITION — SCENE ON BOARD SHIP AT JELLAH KOFFEE"
The Third Anglo-Ashanti War of 1873–74 had just concluded with General Garnet Wolseley's forces defeating the Ashanti and burning Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti Kingdom in present-day Ghana. This illustration documents the loading of livestock aboard ship at a West African port for the British expedition — the logistical reality of Victorian colonial warfare in the tropics. "Jellah Koffee" refers to the West African coastal port area connected to the campaign. For West African history collectors, Ghana history enthusiasts, Ashanti history buffs, British colonial history researchers, and Victorian military history collectors.
🦌 THREE-QUARTER PAGE — "LAPLANDER'S ENCAMPMENT ON THE NEVA AT ST. PETERSBURG"
One of the most unusual and extraordinary illustrations in this run. Every winter, Sami (Laplander) people from the far north of Scandinavia and Russia traveled to St. Petersburg with their reindeer herds — setting up encampments on the frozen Neva River where they sold reindeer milk, meat, and hides to the imperial capital's inhabitants. This three-quarter-page illustration shows exactly that: Sami tents and reindeer on the ice of the Neva, the baroque palaces of St. Petersburg rising behind them. It is one of the most visually striking juxtapositions of indigenous Arctic life and European imperial grandeur in any American illustrated newspaper of the era. For Sami history collectors, Arctic indigenous culture enthusiasts, St. Petersburg history buffs, and anyone fascinated by the meeting of cultures at the edge of empire.
🍺 HALF PAGE — "THE LICENSED VENDOR — LENT"
A half-page illustration of a licensed liquor vendor during the Lenten season — when Catholic and some Protestant communities abstained from alcohol. The tension between Lenten temperance and the licensed trade, rendered with Harper's characteristic gentle irony. Connects directly to the Temperance Crusade page and the supplement's dramatic moral contrast.
👤 QUARTER PAGE — THE HON. JAMES W. HUSTED
Portrait of James William Husted — New York Republican politician and Speaker of the New York State Assembly. A period political portrait for New York state history and Republican Party history collections.

📄 THE SUPPLEMENT PAGES
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🏡 TWO FULL PAGES — "TEMPERANCE, INDUSTRY & HAPPINESS" AND "INTEMPERANCE, IDLENESS & MISERY"
The supplement's dramatic centerpiece — and one of the most explicitly moral pairings Harper's ever published. Two full-page illustrations placed in direct contrast:
· **Temperance, Industry & Happiness** — a prosperous family home: the husband sober and employed, the wife and children well-dressed and comfortable, the house clean and orderly, food on the table. The rewards of sobriety made visible.
· **Intemperance, Idleness & Misery** — the same domestic scene inverted: the husband drunk or idle, the wife worn and distressed, the children in ragged clothes, the house in disorder. The wages of drink, laid out in unsparing detail.
This before-and-after format was the central rhetorical tool of the temperance movement — the visual argument that alcohol destroyed families, that sobriety built them. Published at the exact moment the Woman's Crusade was sweeping the country, these two supplement pages are primary documents of the temperance movement's visual culture. For temperance history collectors, WCTU history researchers, women's history enthusiasts, Victorian moral reform historians, and social welfare history buffs.
