    🗞️ HARPER'S WEEKLY · February 14, 1874
Valentine's Day · Complete Issue + Supplement · New York

    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

One of the most historically layered issues in this run. A portrait of Robert Brown Elliott — Black Congressman from South Carolina and one of the great orators of the Reconstruction era — printed alongside the portrait of a Confederate Virginia Senator. The imperial wedding that united Russia and Britain. Four views of St. Petersburg. Napoleon III's mortuary chapel at Chiselhurst. Seal hunters in the Arctic. Assyrian sculpture commemorating the captivity of the Ten Tribes of Israel. A Nast tribute to a famous soprano. A charity concert at Blackwell's Island for New York's poor. This is February 14, 1874 — and it sees the entire world.

🖼️ THE MAIN ISSUE — EVERY ILLUSTRATION
    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✊ PORTRAIT — THE HON. ROBERT BROWN ELLIOTT, OF SOUTH CAROLINA
This is the page that demands attention from every Black history and Reconstruction collector. Robert Brown Elliott was one of the most remarkable men in American political life: born in England, educated at Eton College, elected to Congress from South Carolina as a Black Republican during Reconstruction. His January 1874 speech defending the Civil Rights Bill before the House of Representatives was one of the most celebrated congressional addresses of the era — a demolition of every argument against Black civil rights, delivered with legal precision and moral force. His portrait appears here alongside that of Robert E. Withers of Virginia — a Confederate veteran and Senator from the former slave state that most fiercely resisted everything Elliott stood for. Two men in the same issue: the Reconstruction that was possible, and the Reconstruction that was being dismantled. For African American history collectors, Reconstruction era scholars, South Carolina history enthusiasts, Black political history buffs, and anyone who knows the name Robert Brown Elliott — this portrait is a primary document.

🎭 FRONT PAGE — TWO-THIRDS PAGE — LIVES OF THE RICH AND THE POOR
A front-page illustration contrasting wealth and poverty in Gilded Age America — the great chasm between New York's mansions and its slums rendered in Harper's direct visual language. A companion piece thematically to Homer's Station House Lodgers the previous week.

🎵 FULL PAGE — THOMAS NAST: "PAREPA ROSA"
Euphrosyne Parepa-Rosa — the celebrated Welsh-born soprano, one of the most beloved opera singers in America and Britain — died in January 1874. Nast's full-page tribute renders her memory with the same power he brought to political subjects. For opera history collectors, Victorian music enthusiasts, and Welsh heritage collectors.

🏛️ PORTRAIT — THE HON. ROBERT E. WITHERS, OF VIRGINIA
Quarter-page portrait of Robert E. Withers — Confederate veteran, physician, and now United States Senator from Virginia. His presence alongside Elliott's portrait on the same page is the Reconstruction-era American political contradiction in miniature.

🏥 HALF PAGE — "CONCERT FOR THE INMATES OF THE CHARITY HOSPITAL, BLACKWELL'S ISLAND"
Blackwell's Island — today Roosevelt Island — was New York City's great warehouse of the poor, sick, and marginalized: a charity hospital, a workhouse, a lunatic asylum, a penitentiary, all crowded together on a narrow strip in the East River. A concert given there for the inmates was a charitable gesture in an era when the island's residents were largely invisible to polite society. This half-page illustration documents that concert — the performers, the patients, the hall. For New York City history collectors, asylum history enthusiasts, social welfare history buffs, and Roosevelt Island historians.

👑 TWO PORTRAITS — "THE GRAND DUCHESS MARIE OF RUSSIA" & "H.R.H. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH"
In January 1874, Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna — daughter of Czar Alexander II of Russia — married Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, son of Queen Victoria. It was the most significant royal wedding of the era, uniting the Russian imperial Romanov dynasty with the British royal family. Two two-thirds-page portraits of the newlyweds appear here. For Russian imperial history collectors, British royal history enthusiasts, Victorian monarchy buffs, and Romanov family collectors — these portraits are published at the exact moment of their wedding.

🏛️ FOUR VIEWS — ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
Four quarter-page illustrations documenting Russia's imperial capital:
    · The Statue of Peter the Great — the iconic Bronze Horseman, symbol of imperial Russia
    · The Isak Cathedral (St. Isaac's Cathedral) — one of the largest cathedrals in the world, its golden dome visible for miles across the Neva River
    · The Naval Column at the Royal Palace — the Alexander Column in Palace Square, celebrating Russia's naval power
    · The Crown Princess Palace — the formal winter residence on the banks of the Neva
Together these four illustrations form a complete visual tour of St. Petersburg's most iconic imperial architecture. Outstanding for Russian history collectors, Orthodox Christian art enthusiasts, and architecture historians.

🦭 HALF PAGE — "HUNTERS KILLING SEALS IN THE ARCTIC REGIONS"
A dramatic half-page illustration of Arctic seal hunters at work — the Victorian sealing industry documented in Harper's characteristic vivid style. Men on ice floes, seals scattered across the white expanse, the brutal economy of the far north. For Arctic history collectors, maritime history enthusiasts, and animal history buffs.

⛪ TWO ILLUSTRATIONS — "MORTUARY CHAPEL IN MEMORY OF NAPOLEON III AT CHISELHURST"
Napoleon III, Emperor of the French, died in January 1873 at Chiselhurst in Kent, England, where the imperial family had been living in exile after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. His mortuary chapel at Chiselhurst became a place of French royalist pilgrimage. Two illustrations — exterior and interior — show the Gothic memorial chapel built in his honor. For French imperial history collectors, Napoleon III enthusiasts, and Victorian religious architecture buffs.

📜 HALF PAGE — "ANCIENT ASSYRIAN SCULPTURE, COMMEMORATING THE CAPTIVITY OF THE TEN TRIBES OF ISRAEL, 749–700 BCE"
An Assyrian relief carving documenting the deportation of the Ten Tribes of Israel by the Assyrian Empire — among the earliest physical evidence connecting biblical narrative to archaeological record. Victorian-era biblical archaeology was electrifying the educated world; the excavations at Nineveh and Nimrud were producing exactly this kind of material, and Harper's was bringing it to American readers. For biblical archaeology collectors, Jewish history enthusiasts, Assyrian history buffs, and ancient Near East scholars.

    🐦 TWO-THIRDS PAGE — "PECK AWAY" (BIRDS)
A beautifully detailed bird illustration — Victorian natural history at its finest.

🦊 TWO HALF-PAGES — "NO ADMISSION" AND "THE DEAD FOX"
Two sporting and animal scene illustrations — a game bird near a trespassing gate and a fox hunt aftermath. The Victorian love of sporting life and animal illustration fully rendered.

    🙈 FULL PAGE — "BLIND"
A full-page genre illustration — a figure or scene exploring themes of blindness, disability, or perhaps moral blindness in the Gilded Age tradition of social allegory.
