The Czar of Russia landing in England across a double-page centerfold. Native Americans offering gifts to the dead and racing canoes. Colorado irrigation opening the West. A Thomas Nast cartoon. Scottish Covenanters before a battle. A eulogy for Charles Sumner with his portrait. And a dramatic Spanish history painting from the Paris Salon of 1874. This is one of the most internationally ambitious issues in this run of Harper's Weekly.

πΌοΈ THE MAIN ISSUE
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
π FRONT PAGE β "IRRIGATION IN COLORADO β LETTING WATER INTO A SIDE SLUICE-WAY"
Full front page. Colorado's water wars were already beginning in 1874 β the irrigation infrastructure that would define the American West for the next century was being built right now, ditch by ditch, sluice by sluice. This front page illustration documents it from the ground up. Outstanding for Colorado history and Western water history collectors.
πͺΆ "INDIANS OFFERING GIFTS TO THE DEAD" & "INDIAN CANOE RACE"
Two half-page illustrations β Native American ceremonial and athletic life rendered with Harper's characteristic detail. The gift-giving to the dead captures a spiritual practice seldom depicted with this degree of care in the illustrated press. The canoe race crackles with energy and motion. Together they form one of the more respectful and visually striking pairs of Native American imagery in this run of Harper's.
π DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β "THE CZAR OF RUSSIA IN ENGLAND β THE DEBARKATION AT DOVER"
The showpiece of the issue. Czar Alexander II of Russia arriving in England β stepping ashore at Dover in a full diplomatic pageant of the Victorian age. The visit was a significant moment in European diplomacy, and Harper's covered it in its grandest format: a full double-page spread of the landing scene, crowds, ships, the full spectacle of empire meeting empire. For Russian history collectors, Victorian diplomatic history collectors, and anyone fascinated by the royalty and power politics of 19th-century Europe β this centerfold is remarkable.
π¨ THOMAS NAST β "THE GREATEST JOKE OF THE CENTURY"
Full page. Nast at his most sardonic β the title alone is a provocation, and the image delivers. Grant-era politics at its most absurd, rendered by the most powerful political cartoonist of the age.
π "ITALIAN ACROBATS"
Three-quarter page β the street performers and circus culture of the Gilded Age captured in motion. A joyful contrast to the political weight of the surrounding pages.
π’ "STUDIES FROM LIFE ON THE DECK OF AN OCEAN STEAMER"
Half-page. Passengers at sea β the transatlantic crossing as Harper's readers actually experienced it, rendered from life.
ποΈ PORTRAITS β BRISTOW & ROCHEFORT
Β· General B.H. Bristow β United States Secretary of the Treasury, who would soon become famous for prosecuting Grant's own Whiskey Ring, one of the most dramatic corruption cases of the Gilded Age.
Β· Henri Rochefort β the firebrand French journalist and radical politician, imprisoned for his role in the Paris Commune and now a figure of worldwide notoriety.

π THE SUPPLEMENT PAGES
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
βοΈ "SCOTTISH COVENANTERS BEFORE A BATTLE" β DRAWN BY PAUL FRENZENY
Full page β the supplement's visual centerpiece. Paul Frenzeny was one of Harper's most gifted illustrators, and this is among his finest work: a mass of Scottish Covenanter soldiers massed on open ground before battle, horses gathered, a minister visible in the background, the sky heavy and dramatic. The Scottish Covenanters were 17th-century Presbyterian fighters who resisted the imposition of Anglican worship β their story of religious conviction and military sacrifice resonated deeply with Victorian readers. Deeply frame-worthy, and outstanding for Scottish history and military history collectors.
ποΈ "CHARLES SUMNER β A EULOGY"
A supplement portrait of Charles Sumner β the great abolitionist Senator from Massachusetts who died in March 1874 β accompanied by a full eulogy delivered by George William Curtis before the Massachusetts Legislature. Sumner spent his career fighting slavery, endured a near-fatal beating on the Senate floor by a pro-slavery Congressman in 1856, and lived long enough to see emancipation. This supplement is his memorial. For Civil War history collectors, abolitionist history collectors, and Massachusetts history enthusiasts, this page carries genuine weight.
π‘οΈ "LOS COMUNEROS EN EL SUPLICIO β EXECUTION OF SPANISH INSURGENTS"
A large, dramatic supplement illustration from a painting exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1874 β depicting the execution of the Comuneros, the Spanish insurgents who led a rebellion against royal authority. Fierce, cinematic, historically rich. Outstanding for Spanish history collectors and fans of 19th-century historical painting.
