π¨ FRONT PAGE β THOMAS NAST: "THERE IS NOTHING MEAN ABOUT US"
Full front page political cartoon by Thomas Nast β America's greatest cartoonist, inventor of the Republican elephant and Democratic donkey, destroyer of Boss Tweed. Here Uncle Sam presides over a characteristically barbed Nast scene in the turbulent politics of Grant's second term. A Nast front page in original form is a collector's landmark.
βοΈ DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β "SMELTING ORE IN COLORADO"
Nine scenes. This is the showpiece of the issue and one of the finest display pieces Harper's published in 1874. Colorado's mining boom was transforming the American West β silver and gold pouring out of the Rockies, smelting operations rising from raw mountain towns. Harper's sent an artist to document it all: furnaces, ore carts, workers, mountain landscapes, the full industrial and human reality of the rush. Nine distinct vignettes across a single magnificent double-page spread. Frame this. Colorado history collectors, mining history collectors, and Western Americana enthusiasts β this centerfold is for you.
πͺοΈ FULL PAGE β "A PRAIRIE WINDSTORM"
A family in a covered wagon, horses rearing, canvas whipping, the plains sky gone dark and violent. One of the most dramatic single images in this run of Harper's β the westward migration at its most raw and precarious. Beautiful, tense, and immediately wall-worthy.
πΊοΈ THREE-QUARTER PAGE β "IN A STRANGE LAND β ASKING THE WAY"
A genre scene of immigrants or travelers navigating an unfamiliar world β the Gilded Age's anxiety about displacement and belonging rendered with Harper's characteristic empathy.

π THE VESUVIUS RAILWAY + MOUNT ARARAT
Two landscape illustrations on facing supplement pages. The Vesuvius Railway β the extraordinary rack railway being built to carry tourists up the slopes of the active volcano β shown with its dramatic stonework infrastructure and the eruption-scarred mountain above. Alongside it, a sweeping view of Mount Ararat rising from the plains of eastern Turkey β remote, biblical, snow-capped, travelers tiny at its base. Both are beautifully engraved and outstanding for display.
πΏ "HOLY HILLS" β DOUBLE-PAGE SUPPLEMENT
A large, luminous double-page pastoral scene β children in a sunlit outdoor setting, trees in full summer leaf, the quality of light in the engraving exceptional. From a painting exhibited in 1874. The supplement's centerpiece, and among the finest genre scenes in this group of issues.
πͺ "A FLEMISH SOLDIER" β GENRE SCENE
A detailed interior illustration of a Flemish military genre scene β the tradition of Northern European genre painting translated into Harper's finest engraving work. Rich in period detail and texture.
