Three weeks after one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, Harper's Weekly put it all on paper. This is the issue America read in July 1862, still reeling from the Seven Days Battles β Lee's first great triumph as Confederate commander, McClellan's shattered Peninsula Campaign, and the Army of the Potomac retreating to the James River. The illustrated record of a turning point in the war, complete in 16 pages.

π° FRONT PAGE β THREE PORTRAITS
The front page carries portraits of two Union generals central to the Peninsula Campaign disaster:
Β· Brigadier-General George A. McCall β commander of the Pennsylvania Reserve Division, captured at Gaines's Mill and held as a Confederate prisoner. His men bore the brunt of the Confederate assault.
Β· Brigadier-General Fitz-John Porter β commander of the V Corps at Gaines's Mill, who held the Union line against overwhelming Confederate numbers in one of the war's most desperate defensive stands.
Β· "The White House on the Pamunkey, Lately Occupied by the Union Forces" β a print of the historic plantation that served as the Army of the Potomac's main supply base during the Peninsula Campaign. It was the former home of Mary Anna Custis Lee β Robert E. Lee's wife β and had passed through the Washington and Custis families before the war. Union forces burned it on retreat.
βοΈ BATTLE OF GAINES'S MILL β CAPTAIN DE HART'S BATTERY
"The Army of the Potomac β Captain De Hart's Battery Shelling the Rebel Advance at the Battle of Gaines's Mills." A dramatic battlefield print showing Union artillery in action during the fight β one of the largest and most costly engagements of the Seven Days. Fought June 27, 1862, Gaines's Mill saw nearly 15,000 combined casualties and ended with the Confederate Army breaking the Union line for the first time under Robert E. Lee's command.
π BURYING THE DEAD & BURNING DEAD HORSES AT FAIR OAKS STATION
One of the most raw and unsparing images in Civil War illustrated press. Fair Oaks (also called Seven Pines) was fought just weeks earlier β May 31βJune 1 β with enormous casualties. Harper's does not look away: burial details at work, the grim logistics of battle's aftermath. Essential for anyone collecting the honest visual record of the war.
π₯ DOUBLE-PAGE CENTERFOLD β GRIFFIN'S AND MARTIN'S BATTERIES AT GAINES'S MILL
"The Army of the Potomac β Griffin's and Martin's Batteries Pouring Canister Into the Rebel Ranks at Gaines's Mills." This is the showpiece of the issue. A full double-page spread β the largest format Harper's offered β depicting Union artillery firing canister shot at point-blank range into Confederate infantry. Canister rounds turned cannons into giant shotguns; their use signals the desperation of the moment. A stunning, terrifying, display-worthy Civil War battle scene.
π THE CHICKAHOMINY β TWO PRINTS
Β· "Bridge Through the Chickahominy Swamp" β the miserable terrain that defined and doomed the Peninsula Campaign. The Army of the Potomac spent weeks trying to move artillery and supply wagons through one of Virginia's most treacherous river swamps.
Β· "A Picket on the Chickahominy β The Relief Approaching" β a quieter image of soldiers on watch duty along the river. The human scale of the campaign between the great battles.
β HARRISON'S LANDING ON THE JAMES RIVER
"Harrison's Landing on the James River, the New Base of the Army of the Potomac." After Gaines's Mill and the Seven Days, McClellan retreated here β to the James River, under the protection of Union gunboats. This print shows the army's new reality: dug in, diminished, waiting. Lincoln visited Harrison's Landing in person just days before this issue was published.
π¨ BACK PAGE β TWO POLITICAL CARTOONS
Β· "The Scape Goat Now on Exhibition in Washington" β a biting cartoon on the political blame game following the Peninsula Campaign's failure. Who lost Virginia?
Β· "Richmond Newsboy Announcing the Rebel Success!!" β the Confederate home front's celebration of Lee's victories, rendered with Harper's dry irony.

π ABOUT HARPER'S WEEKLY
ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
Founded in 1857, Harper's Weekly was the dominant illustrated newspaper of the Civil War era β the visual record that shaped how millions of Americans understood the war as it happened. Its engravers worked from battlefield sketches and early photographs to produce images that were, for most readers, the closest they would ever come to seeing the war. A complete Civil War-era issue is a genuine primary document of American history.
