πŸ“œ ABOUT THIS PIECE OF HISTORY πŸ“œ

This is The Great Speckled Bird, Volume Seven, Number Forty-Four, October 31, 1974 β€” twenty-five cents, Atlanta Cooperative News Project, published on Halloween, and one of the most musically and politically charged issues in this extraordinary run of Atlanta's legendary alternative weekly.

Two concert listings alone make this issue remarkable. Lou Reed at the Municipal Auditorium. David Bowie at the Omni, December 1 β€” in the middle of his Diamond Dogs tour, one of the most theatrical and visually spectacular rock productions ever staged. These are not retrospective notices. These are advance listings for shows that were about to happen, printed in the paper that Atlanta's music community actually read.

Everything else in this issue β€” and there is a great deal of everything else β€” radiates the same energy: a city alive, politically engaged, culturally voracious, and completely unwilling to look away from anything.

🎸 DAVID BOWIE AT THE OMNI & LOU REED β€” CONCERT LISTINGS 🎸

The music and concert pages carry the announcement that stops the scroll: David Bowie at the Omni, December 1 β€” produced by Alex Cooley and Maiman, with Jules Fisher supervising production. The Diamond Dogs tour was Bowie at his most theatrical extreme β€” a post-apocalyptic stage production with an elevated city set, a cherry picker, dancers, and a full theatrical production unlike anything Atlanta had seen. The Bird had it.

Lou Reed at the Municipal Auditorium. The Velvet Underground's former frontman, now a solo force. Two of the defining artists of 1970s rock, in Atlanta, in the pages of the paper that knew where the city's pulse was.

Also in the concert listings: Roger McGuinn, Mahogany Rush, Kansas, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, Don Preston, and the Hudson Band at the Electric Ballroom β€” a complete picture of Atlanta's live music world in October 1974.

✊ ITT AT EMORY β€” THE COVER STORY ✊

The front page carries ITT at Emory β€” a full account of the dramatic protest at Emory University's Robert Woodruff Library, where ITT's traveling art exhibition "Information and Communication" opened to a reception of 200 picketers chanting "ITT get out of Chile!" outside the glass windows. The contrast was complete and intentional: inside, guests in evening clothes eating canapΓ©s while a string quartet played Beethoven; outside, protesters with signs connecting ITT directly to the CIA-backed overthrow of Salvador Allende's government in Chile.

The Bird's Steve Seaberg illustration of the scene β€” protesters at the glass, guests inside, a Coca-Cola bottle in the foreground β€” is as sharp a piece of political cartooning as the paper ever ran.

🦊 THE FUTURE OF THE FOX & THEVIS TO BUY FOX 🦊

The Bird Scoop on the cover promises The Future of the Fox β€” coverage of the ongoing campaign around the fate of Atlanta's beloved Fox Theatre, which had been threatened with demolition. The inner pages carry the extraordinary story: Thevis to Buy Fox β€” Michael Thevis, Atlanta's infamous adult entertainment mogul (later convicted of murder and racketeering), was attempting to purchase the Fox Theatre. The Bird was covering what no one else would touch.

    ---

    πŸ’° ROCKEFELLER'S GIFTS β€” BUYING POWER πŸ’°

The cover also teases Rockefeller's Gifts-Buying Power β€” an investigation into how Nelson Rockefeller's enormous personal wealth and philanthropic giving functioned as a political instrument as his Vice Presidential confirmation hearings proceeded. The interior carries Rocky's Share the Wealth Program β€” a pointed political satire with illustration, connecting Rockefeller's public gifts to his private power.

🎡 LITTLE RICHARD & TERMINUS: THE REKINDLING OF ATLANTA 🎡

A feature on Little Richard β€” the Macon-born architect of rock and roll β€” sits alongside Terminus: The Rekindling of Atlanta, a substantial cultural piece about the city's artistic and civic renaissance. The Bird was Atlanta's cultural memory and its conscience simultaneously.

πŸ•ŠοΈ HOMAGE TO NERUDA / AID TO CHILEAN REFUGEES πŸ•ŠοΈ

The free classifieds and community pages carry Homage to Neruda β€” a tribute to the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who had died in the days after the 1973 coup β€” alongside Aid to Chilean Refugees and solidarity actions. The Bird's connection between local activism and international solidarity was constant and unwavering.
